“We Look Forward to OSU for Your Capable Hands and Quality Partnership,” VC&P Prof. Koroma

University Secretariat, Campus – 27th May, 2025— University has on Monday, 26th May 2025, launched the Sustainable Aquaculture for Food Empowerment (SAFE) Project, in partnership with Oklahoma State University (OSU), with support from the Milburn Foundation. Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of University, described the project as a major step in the transformation of Sierra Leone’s higher education and food security.
The project targets the annual production and distribution of 30 tons of fish, focusing on vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and the elderly.
Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma expressed profound appreciation to President Julius Maada Bio and the Government of Sierra Leone for their unwavering support. “We are in this together for outcome-based education and youth empowerment,” he emphasized during the welcome ceremony.
He highlighted that the SAFE Project aligns with the national Feed Salone agenda and aims to promote food security through freshwater aquaculture. “This project is complimentary to Feed Salone as one of the Big Five Changers,” he told stakeholders at the launch.
The VC&P revealed that and Oklahoma State University conceived the project through a shared vision of teaching, research, and innovation. “It is this shared commitment and value that led us to come together in pursuit of this transformative goal,” he said.
Professor Koroma proudly announced that the project has moved from planning to implementation. “The earthen ponds and concrete tanks are 100% complete, while the hatchery is 70% done and will be ready in days,” he noted.
He confirmed that procurement of key equipment such as fish feed machines and a cold room container is ongoing. “This project is more than an academic exercise; it is a beacon of sustainable development,” he declared.
To ensure transparency and local engagement, the university formed a stakeholder committee comprising community leaders, administrators, and technical experts. “The committee works closely with the project team to ensure inclusive participation,” he added.
As he looked to the future, Professor Koroma reaffirmed the university’s commitment to transformation. “We look forward to OSU for your capable hands and quality partnership to make our dreams a reality,” he concluded, calling for continued collaboration in advancing national development.
